In 2016 was het 400 jaar geleden dat de Nederlandse Dirk Hartog voet aan wal zette in Australië. Studio Penong gebruikte dit moment voor de start van het meerjarig ‘community project’ Bridging the Distance.
Doel van het Bridging the Distance project is ‘to ignite a desire under the younger generation to find out more about their Dutch roots’.
De Nederlandse Ambassade in Canberra noemde het project ‘een welkome aanvulling op de festiviteiten van het Dirk Hartog jaar’.

De online expositie biedt de kans om op zoek te gaan naar je eigen migratieverhaal.
Rochelle en Kyra
Kyra and Rochelle’s mutual passion for cooking seems to have been inherited from their great-grandmother Maria op den Buijs, who worked as a cook at a nunnery.
Dubbelportretten
Bridging the Distance daagt uit om op zoek te gaan naar achterneven en -nichten aan de andere kant van de wereld. Van de nieuwe connecties zijn dubbelportretten/interviews gemaakt, die een inkijk in het verleden geven, gezien door de ogen van de tweede of derde generatie.
Online community
De online community speelt een centrale rol in het Bridging the Distance project. Met een mix van win-acties, inhakers op bijvoorbeeld de Census en ‘Wear Orange Day’, en zelfs een videorecept voor kroketten, lukte het in korte tijd een grote groep Nederlandse Australiërs voor het Bridging the Distance project te interesseren. Met ruim 1600 volgers is het – na de ambassade – zelfs de grootste NL-AUS Facebook-community.
Vervolgproject
Bridging the Distance en het Migrant: Mobilities and Connection project vullen elkaar goed aan en werken samen aan een vervolgproject: een serious game.
Jong en oud leggen samen de migratie familiegeschiedenis vast – liefst met persoonlijke verhalen – zodat wat eens was een levende herinnering blijft.
Het ‘Migrant: Mobilities and Connection’ project is een project van het Huygens ING, HOME Centre van de Curtin University in Perth en de Digital Humanities Research Group van de University Western Sydney. Het project is gericht op ‘immigrants who moved to Australia from the post-war Netherlands and their life histories.’
